Thriving Native Wildlife in the

Upper Clutha

We’ve changed our name from Wānaka Backyard Trapping to Predator Free Wānaka

Protecting Our Native Wildlife

Our native wildlife needs our support. Predators such as rats, stoats, hedgehogs, and possums are putting immense pressure on our unique ecosystems, affecting native birds as well as skinks and geckos. These species are an integral part of our natural heritage, found nowhere else in the world.

Around 35 native species in our region are currently threatened with extinction.

With proactive efforts, we can protect these precious taonga (treasures) and ensure their survival for generations to come.

Restoration Through Action

We’re on a mission to eliminate predators and restore the balance of our ecosystems.

Our team of over 120 volunteers contribute their time and effort to target predators, setting and monitoring traps, and raising awareness. They navigate bush, hills and varying weather conditions in the battle to protect our native species.

We are a 100% volunteer-driven, community-led organisation, united by a shared commitment to our environment and a vision of seeing our native wildlife thrive.

Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and supporters, we’re seeing signs of recovery:

  • Increased sightings of native birds like the tūī, korimako (bellbird), and kererū

  • Improved nesting success rates in monitored areas.

But there’s still so much more to do. Your support can help us expand our reach and accelerate our vital work.
